migrations
JANET LINK

migrations is an ongoing series of graphite and charcoal drawings based on photographs of shadows. It was born from a thematic prompt the artist received as a participant in an artist’s residency and cultural exchange at al maqam in Tahanaout, Morocco. For this exhibition Link worked from just four photographic images with the narrow aim of studying light through the observant act of mark making. Each drawing is composed of thousands of individual marks, a process that involves many hours. The task of creating these works involves slowing down the process of observation in order for the truth of the subject to migrate to the drawing. This body of work is both a personal record and one of the futility of attempting to pin down that which migrates.
