A MOVING GROVE
BY BRIGHTWORK FELLOW ANNIE BLAZEJACK
IN COLLABORATION WITH GEDDES LEVENSON

FEBRUARY 1 - FEBRAUARY 29, 2020

Long term collaborators Annie and Geddes have created a body of work that weaves a feminist, ecocentric, sci-fi narrative and address environments imperiled by sea level rise. Sometimes the two artists take turns painting on the same canvas. At other times, they create painted ‘conversations,’ in which each artist adds small paintings to a shared series. Meaning emerges through accumulation, free-association, and re-sequencing.

Their work seeks a role for humans in the sentient ecosystem. Something from the swamp builds its home in a suburban swimming pool. Hybrid alligator-women wallow about in the history of painting. The mangrove forest hive mind thinks and feels and knows things that no human will ever fathom. But we try.

With Reading of Ecocentrist Macbeth and group bicycle ride to the gallery, with a stop at Walnut Creek Wetland Center.
