Movements
by Maria Britton
May 3rd - June 28th
Movements features Maria Britton’s most recent abstract paintings, newspaper pulp sculptures, and sewn wall-based works, called Draperies, made from patterned bed sheets. Through her use of everyday materials including bed sheets and newspapers, Maria transforms objects typically on their way out the door into an opportunity to elevate and extend experiences of liminality. Her work explores notions of femininity and feminism, high and low forms of making, and dreams and disasters. Through her combination of an intuitive, gestural approach with carefully sewn and sculpted works, she playfully blurs the high and low art divide while calling attention to often overlooked techniques, materials, and perspectives. Influenced by clothing construction, the human body, curtains, windows, flowers, and cycles in nature, Maria’s work is a material exploration of the immaterial.
